History

Yuan incorporated the company as Saasbee in 2011, renamed it Zoom in 2012, and launched the service in January 2013 after a Series A that included Qualcomm Ventures and Yahoo founder Jerry Yang.1 Sequoia's 2017 Series D valued Zoom at about US$1 billion.1 The April 2019 IPO priced at US$36 a share and rose more than 70% on the first day.1 Usage surged in the COVID-19 pandemic; the company later cut staff and repositioned toward an AI workplace platform, renaming itself Zoom Communications in 2024.1

Security record

Zoom's early marketing of “end-to-end encryption” was criticized as inaccurate, and the company faced investigations and an US$86 million privacy class-action settlement.1 Those facts belong in any authoritative summary. Later product work added default passwords, a security freeze on new features in 2020, and clearer encryption claims.1
