Moonshot AI is a Beijing company that builds the Kimi family of large language models and is one of China's so-called AI Tigers.

Moonshot AI (Chinese: 月之暗面) is a Beijing artificial-intelligence company founded in March 2023 by Yang Zhilin, Zhou Xinyu, and Wu Yuxin.1 It develops the Kimi chatbot and open-weight Kimi models.1 Wikipedia records a July 2026 valuation of US$35 billion after later funding; that figure is press-reported.1

History

The three founders met at Tsinghua University. Yang had worked at Google Brain, Meta, and Huawei.1 Kimi launched in October 2023 with a long-context pitch.1 Alibaba led a large 2024 round; Tencent later joined.1 Subsequent model releases, including K2 and later K3 according to Wikipedia, made Kimi a frequently cited Chinese open-weight line.1 Anthropic has accused Moonshot of distillation; those claims are allegations, not findings of this encyclopedia.1
