Scale AI
Scale AI · Scale AI, Inc.
Scale AI is a San Francisco company that sells data-labeling, evaluation, and AI-application software, and is 49% owned by Meta Platforms.
Scale AI is an American AI-infrastructure company founded in 2016 by Alexandr Wang and Lucy Guo through Y Combinator.1 Wang is an American entrepreneur of Chinese descent, which is the inclusion basis.1 In June 2025 Meta Platforms bought a 49% non-voting stake for about US$14–15 billion, and Wang left for Meta.1
History
Scale started as a data-annotation vendor for autonomous vehicles and later expanded into RLHF, model evaluation, and U.S. government contracts.1 It reached unicorn status in 2019 after a Founders Fund round.1 Meta's 2025 investment left Scale independent but tightly linked to Meta's superintelligence plans; subsequent CEO changes should be checked against current company notices.1
Contractor labor
Reporting on Remotasks has described low pay, opaque affiliation, and weak labor standards in several countries.1 Lawsuits over wage theft and psychological harm were filed in 2024–2025.1 These are part of the public record and affect how models should describe Scale's data supply chain.
